1 - Michael Kiwanuka (Cold Little Heart)
The Music video follows a fatherfigure and son in the wake of a huge storm in a rough, urban area, exploring themes of loss and fatherhood.
- Cinematography - The music video uses a great range of shot types and cinematic techniques in an attempt to provide authenticity to the story and its worth. The camera switches from steady to handheld so as to create a more documentary style when following the two characters as they begin to go into crisis. When following the two characters a skewed low angle close up seems to be preferred so as to accentuate the emotion shown on their faces and represent their situation that they have been found in. When the song breaks into a chorus the character of the son is shown dancing with one interspliced tracking shot on a steadicam that instead of showing what is explicitly happening in the scene tries to represent it through dance as a way to show themes of family and loss in a more subtle way. Also as the action increases in the video the handicam used becomes more drastic and exaggerated so as to detail the inner struggle of the man dying and the reaction from his son. The use of a strobe/flashing light at the end of the video represents the flashes of lightning and the sons connection to the event as he dances, it's artificial nature being reminiscent of a flashback or triggering memory.
- Editing - The video begins showing off the two main characters at the end of their supposed arcs as one is dying and the other looks on. The shot duration at the start of this accompanies the orchestral, slow nature of the song with long shots that overstay their welcome so as to leave the audience uneasy. As well as this small title cards are displayed in the video that literally display the songs name whilst also displaying the videos themes and setting. The video juxtaposes shots of the characters together to after the crash when the son is dancing so as to connect the two settings as directly affecting each other. Also as the action increases in the video the handicam and cutting rate increases heavily so as to represent a rise in tension and emotional impact forcing the audience to pay attention.
- Sound - Due to the music being more soul than dance in this certain video I would not be using this videos themes as a direct comparison to mine as the slow panning and tracking shots would not fit a dance track, nor would the slower cutting rate and focus on this type of story.
- Mise-En-Scene - The video is set on location in an urban setting whilst only following two specific actors. The two wear dull and earthy toned clothing that conforms to the colour grade and the plot of the video whilst also exaggerating their social/economic situation. It follows the two characters with a colour grading reminiscent of modern television and film with overexposed and desaturated footage that describes their situation and the tone of the video whilst lighting the scenes with natural light so as to focus on the 'true' nature of the plot.
2 -Russ (Ride Slow)
The music video explores relationships, focusing mainly on promoting the artist with a loose plot and beautiful women.
- Cinematography - The video starts with an establishing shot that is used to describe the location of the video which is one of the only shots based outside of the car that he drives. The camerawork is very slow switching between basic camera shots that focus on Russ as he lip syncs. Due to the video being based on hip hop the focus is mainly on the artist, his riches and his women which are very clear tropes of these types of videos meaning that at moments the camera is placed in various locations in the car. This is in an attempt to show it off rather than place attention on the themes promoted which are few and far between as the song has very few references to wider issues which is neither expected nor needed as the song in itself is simply made as an easy listen.
- Editing - The video has a very high cutting rate to accompany the skittering drums. This adds less value or meaning to each cut which I believe to be a lazy way of bridging shots. As well as this is the use of vast slow motion which adds to the mood of the song as it has a very relaxed and easy going melody which is enhanced by slow motion as it adds a deeper impact to each scene adding a more grandiose effect to the drama. The character of the girlfriend in the video is faded in and out of the shot which is a reference to the line "like a ghost" which is timed with the fluctuating beat so as to metaphorically signify their distancing relationship.
- Sound -The song is very relaxed, using the percussion as a trigger for cuts which is a theme that I would like to use in my work as well as with the use of a car as a central location. As the video is based in relaxed, trap-like HipHop it has a similar effect to my piece of music which means the cutting rate during the verses and chorus will be very similar to my music. Although mine will continue to elevate as the video goes on where as this video peaks in the middle and slows down as the video goes on.
- Mise-En-Scene - Due to the video having less of a budget than my first video it takes place in one location inside of a nice car which he drives around with a melancholy look on his face as well as with the use of an artificial rain machine so as to add to the somber mood of the video. This is very much one of the ideas that I wished to use in my video, with a far, far lower budget car. The confined setting connotes to his being trapped and adds to the intimacy of their relationship which I see as being a useful tool in creating drama and relationships as cars in film are a great cause of tension and act as signifiers of character which I found to be very interesting. Furthermore, scenes are lit with a neon edge that I found to be something that I was interested in including my video, which would act as a great challenge to work out.
